The result is rich and pleasing colors, sometimes ranging from blues to dark greens, that give surface metal an antique, weathered appearance. Patina occurs when naturally occurring metals such as copper or bronze, come into contact with acids or salts in the environment. Patina is the result of a natural corrosion process that occurs when metal is exposed to the air and humidity, while rust is caused by oxidation of iron in the presence of water. While patina and rust can appear similar in color, their chemical compositions are quite different. Patina trucks are often prized for their individualized look and the unique stories they tell. Rat rods are popular among car enthusiasts for their creative designs as well as for their affordability, since many of the parts used can be found at swap meets, flea markets, junkyards and other sources for inexpensive parts. Rat rods often feature engines, parts, and bodies from different makes and models, and may feature a combination of traditional car building techniques with other materials, such as found objects and scrapyard parts, to give it a unique look. Traditionally, these cars get their name from the idea that the car is “ratted,” or put together with whatever materials are easily available. The term ‘rat rod’ generally refers to a type of custom vehicle that is typically built by combining vintage car parts to create a unique and often quirky-looking ride. ![]() What is the difference between rust and patina?.So with some boiled linseed oil and some mineral spirits, you can shine up worn paint without going the full Discovery Channel route. For years, the usual go-to plan was to clearcoat over the patina to provide a protective layer. I can see why someone would want to preserve this look on a car that’s lived this long in original condition. Most of the car still wears it’s original color, the two-tone looks good, it’s just a little bit of heat rash. But real patina, like the kind this 1954 Dodge Royal is wearing, that’s the kind where it’s difficult to just repaint it. And ordinarily, I’d be all about that, but one word says to try something different: patina.įaked patina bites. Morel does show some improvement as an action director. This is a mother’s rage, after all something to be cherished and encouraged at any cost. But the movie could have ameliorated this much better by, I don’t know, not having Garner mow down countless brown-skinned folks with her expertly curated arsenal, a compromise Morel was clearly unwilling to make or think about. Peppermint tries to ameliorate the fact that most of her targets are remorseless Latino criminals with crooked judges, sketchy lawyers, and the fact that her (white) husband got them into this mess in the first place, as well as providing a sympathetic cop played by John Ortiz (most of the other good guys, for that matter, are non-white). When the murderers aren’t punished for their crimes, Riley goes off the grid, trains for years (something that happens offscreen without so much as a montage), and returns to exact her revenge. So it’s not that Riley North (Garner) is, say, a former black-ops soldier or even a cop she’s just a hard-working bank teller consumed with grief when her husband and young daughter are murdered by drug dealers. ![]() ![]() Seeing her return to ass-kicking carries Peppermint further than it should really be allowed to go, especially on the back of its relentless quasi-motivational cynicism-also predicated on Garner’s mom bona fides.Īt this point, the notion of a parent (especially a mom) so adrenalized by a threat to their child that they can lift a school bus has become nearly as gospel to screenwriters as the idea that humans only use 10 percent of their brain. Garner had her big breakthrough as a spy on Alias, but in movies, apart from an attempt to franchise her Elektra character from the misbegotten Daredevil movie, she has branched out to rom-coms and, most recently, as a super-mom, presumably an intersection of her own interests as a mother and Hollywood’s interests in having any actress over 28 play one. (Putting Helen Mirren in a couple of action franchises as a jape doesn’t count.) But now, Garner’s time to kill has arrived with Peppermint, which does not come from the Luc Besson-Eurotrash action factory but is directed by Taken’s Pierre Morel. This has become such a reliable formula that it’s remarkable, really, that it took so long for a respected middle-aged actress like Jennifer Garner to get her own action movie where she hunts down remorseless bad guys. We can talk about our favorite moments in Mad Max: Fury Road or the John Wick series, but has there been a more influential semi-recent action film than Taken? The Luc Besson-produced potboiler about Liam Neeson-and only Liam Neeson-realizing the mortal danger of allowing his daughter to travel abroad and go to a U2 concert was a big hit, and did such a great job of creating a second career for Neeson as a late-period ass-kicker that plenty of similarly overqualified actors followed suit. ![]() ![]() Pica-Marker 3030/SB Pica-Dry Longlife Automatic Pencil features a lead feed that is enclosed in a stainless steel tube and the tube’s unique push-in mechanism helps you get the desired lead length automatically and without any effort. In the end, the banner measures about 53” from end to end (48” if you’re only measuring the pom poms). I debated on using four, but in the end decided to just stick with three. It took a little trial and error to figure out how many mini pom poms I would need in each section, but eventually settled on three. I think it makes it look a bit more “finished” than simply having the string showing through. So I decided to make smaller white poms to fill in the gaps in between each of the bigger ones. Unlike the felt banner, I wanted the entire length to be filled with pom poms. When you put the two banners side by side they make a really good match. I even tried to match the yarn colors to my felt as best as I could. I’m such a sucker for pastel rainbow colors, so that’s the color scheme I went with once again. So it’s a bit delayed, but I’m finally happy to have this one finished. Then afterward I took a bit of a hiatus from my blog to focus on my personal life. The new Ford Escape is also worth a look and offers more powertrain choices than any other vehicle in the class. The Mazda CX-5 is a pleasure to drive and, like the Equinox, has a powerful optional motor. If you're in the market for a crossover with fewer drawbacks, consider the Honda CR-V, which has more cargo and passenger room, plus a more satisfying 1.5-liter turbo engine. (Thankfully, this is a stand-alone option at all trim levels.) Finally, even moderately sized passengers will balk at the limited rear headroom afforded by the panoramic sunroof. It feels slower than rival powerplants, and its fuel-saving stop-start function is annoying in operation and cannot be disabled. We're also not huge fans of the standard turbocharged 1.5-liter engine. The high cost of entry is a theme that repeats since the Equinox is more expensive than competitors when comparing trims on a feature-by-feature basis. The next-level LS costs thousands more and doesn't add much. It's special-order only, so you're unlikely to find one on a dealer lot. Don't get thrown off by the seemingly affordable base L trim level, either. The Equinox is priced higher than many of its rivals, for instance. Things, however, fall apart in execution. We also like that the Equinox is one of the few entries in the class that offer an upgraded engine. It also delivers a smooth, comfortable ride, and the seats are shaped for all-day comfort. There's plenty of legroom all around, and cargo space is definitely better than what you'll find in a comparably priced sedan or hatchback. Certainly, the Chevrolet Equinox does the SUV thing well. ![]() |
