Directions for Route 1 and Route 2 are shown after the map. Both routes describe ways to get to the Backbone from Fredericksburg and to return to home base. We don’t like riding most back roads because our sport bikes don’t like gravel and sand, but this back road was pretty nice.Ĭheck out the two routes and mix up the routes to find your favorite. Fischer Store Rd is nice smooth back road included in the return ride. FM-306 is very commercial with plenty of gas stations and restaurants BUT it is filled with traffic, not terribly enjoyable.īoth rides use the same route to return to Fredericksburg. Route 2 is a straighter shot to FM-32 and includes a ride through Canyon City on FM-306. Our favorite route, Route 1, includes a ride on FM-473 to FM-32 and adds a little more variety before having to ride the long straight section of of FM-32 before the Backbone. There is also a Valero gas station next to the restaurant to make it convenient for both lunch and a gas fill up. Both rides take about 70 mi to get to our lunch stop at Milagro’s Hill Country Tex Mex, a good Tex Mex restaurant with enough variety, good service and food, and comfortable seating. In 2018, we included the backbone in two routes those two routes are included here. Many visitors place crosses on/near the fence to memorialize loved ones. A section of the Devil’s Backbone Overlook. This short section is really fun to ride but it doesn’t last long! Heading west on FM-32, the sign for the picnic area comes up fast! Turn in to see the Devil’s Backbone Overlook. Devil’s Backbone is a well known 1.2 mi serpentine section on Farm to Market 32 that is a few miles east of Fischer, TX.
